Phobias
When fear takes up all the room
Flying, spiders, heights, the dentist, lifts… A phobia is not inevitable: it can ease.
You know your fear is out of proportion. You have told yourself so a hundred times. And yet, faced with the object of your phobia — or even just the thought of it — your body takes over: racing heart, shortness of breath, sweating, the urge to run.
Little by little, the phobia dictates your choices: you give up a trip, put off a dentist appointment, avoid certain places, organise your life around it. It is not a lack of courage. It is your unconscious which, one day, labelled a situation as dangerous and keeps “protecting” you from it with far too much zeal.
Since reason is not enough to convince it, we will work with it directly.
Which phobias?
The most common ones… and all the others
Your phobia is not on the list? Let’s talk about it: each one has its own story, and the work adapts to yours. For the fear of speaking in front of others or being assessed, see also fear of exams and oral tests.
How I support you
- Finding the origin: during the 3-hour first session, we take the time to understand when and how the fear set in — sometimes a specific event, sometimes a fear passed on by others or one that appeared for no obvious reason.
- Defusing the triggering event: when a memory is involved (turbulence, a bite, feeling faint, a painful treatment…), EMDR can remove its emotional charge.
- Learning a different response: under hypnosis, safely and at your own pace, we can approach the dreaded situation in your imagination and link it to calm rather than alarm.
- Preparing for real life: we work on the concrete situation ahead of you — a planned flight, dental treatment, a journey — so you can approach it more calmly.
You remain in control at every moment: nothing happens without your agreement, and you are never confronted with the object of your fear at the practice.
